Review: Monoprice Drawing Tablet 12” x 9”

Posted in Tech by Dan To

There’s a different company besides Wacom that makes drawing tablets? What?!?!

The quest for a graphics tablet began as I was looking for something to replace my aging Wacom Graphire4, it has simply become too small for me to use comfortably. Moving up there was only a few options: a wacom bamboo, or a pricey intuos tablet. Upon searching for tablets I found this Monoprice drawing tablet, and I couldn’t believe the price: $89.90. Yes, eighty nine dollars and ninety cents. Specification wise it matched or was better than bamboo:

Bamboo Create:
-2540 lines per inch
-1024 Pressure Levels
-8.5” x 5.4” Active Area
-133pps Max Data Rate
-$150 MSRP

Monoprice 12” x 9”:
-4000 lines per inch
-1024 Pressure Levels
-12” x 9” Active Area
-200 pps Max Data Rate
-$89.90 MSRP

I’ve lent my graphire to a family member a week before I received this tablet, and lets just say: I haven’t asked for it back nor do I intend to.

The Unboxing:

The box and tablet are huge, and I order an extra pen because previous reviewers said that the original pen felt light and uncomfortable.

Wow, I am blown away at the quality of this device, for 90$ I was expecting a piece of plastic that would fall apart in my hands and a tablet that was less accurate than a drunk man in a batting cage blindfolded. What I received was a high quality device that rivals or is even better than a wacom graphire and bamboo, the active area is huge (12 x 9) which allows me to sweep across the tablet with my entire arm. Provided drivers work flawlessly on windows 8, I don’t have any complaints other than the fact that it takes up half of my desk.
