HP dm4 – 2191us review

Posted in Tech by Jen

So for a while, I’ve been meaning to buy a new laptop and I finally found one! I searched everywhere, but nothing really fit my expectations, if they did they were too expensive. It came to the point where I even Googled “refurbished laptops” but even that sucked. (Sony VAIO laptop brand-new condition: $540; refurbished: $538….. say wuht?)
Lucky enough, I had to stop by Staples and I stumbled upon an HP Pavilion dm4, 14”, Intel Core i5, 6GB RAM, 640GB Hard drive, Price: $550. After talking to a sales associate, he was kind enough to let me know that another one exactly the same with a tiny difference was going to be on clearance in a few days. The only difference was that it had 4GB RAM instead of 6GB, Price: $450. I think you could guess which one I bought. The clearance one of course! RAM can be updated any time and it’s $100 less, who could say no to that one?
This reasonably priced laptop is perfect for daily use at school (even for travel). It’s also light, portable and not ridiculously bulky. I’ve been using it almost every day; in fact I don’t even remember the last time I touched my desktop. Its sleek design makes it easy to carry around. The keyboard is well spaced. I can’t complain about its processing speed either (maybe because I don’t have much on it…yet). The sound system is pretty nice, it can be VERY loud, but the quality isn’t terrible. It also has a fingerprint reader which I find quite useful. It allows me to unlock my notebook but it also saves my passwords for certain websites (this way I can log in to my Gmail by scanning my finger). Okay so I’m going to get stop rambling on about random features and Viola! I give you the unboxing of my new baby:

Microsoft Office is a must.

What’s inside the box: Charger, battery, etc.

First thing you do: Uninstall the unnecessary things.

Norton Virus Scanner

Bing Bar

Some random crap…

And lastly, unpinning IE.

Installing things that people actually care about and is worthwhile.

Opera

Google Chrome

That is all.

For those of you who are wondering why would it be on clearance? Is it defective? Well, NO. I wasn’t lying when I said POST-Holiday says were pretty much awesome. This laptop/notebook happened to be leftovers from Staple’s Black Friday sale. They couldn’t sell them all and needed to clear out their inventory because newer models were coming in (so said the manager who I also spoke with). Research does come in handy! If you missed out, better luck next year?

P.S. — What color do you think the notebook is? (Serious question).
